Best Shampoo for Color Treated Hair

When you’re looking for the best shampoo for color treated hair, it make’s sense to realize what exactly you are looking for. In general you could be looking at two options:

  1. You’re looking for a shampoo that will make sure the color you have applied to your hair stays alive and vivid as long as possible. Or…
  2. You’re actually looking for a shampoo that will restore some of the health your hair had before you colored it.

Realizing that there are different shampoos for different purposes will make sure you get the best value for your dollar.

One more thing before we move on: coloring your hair is bad. There is more nuance to this, yes to shampoobecause the color treatments and chemicals have become less aggressive over the years. So if you want to put it mildly: not coloring your hair is better than coloring. Now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s move on…

What is the Best Shampoo for Color Treated Hair?

We’ll be exploring our second option in greater depth (where you want your healthy hair back, or you want to care for your hair as much as possible after having colored it).

After you’ve got your hair colored (either yourself or at a hair salon) you want to get a “color safe” shampoo and conditioner. You want one of those each, because you want the colors to last as long as possible. Otherwise you need to repeat your color treatment more often, which is bad for your hair and your wallet.

Color treating your hair typically damages your hair, by making it dry and irritating or even damaging your scalp, plus the follicles (ever had that prickly feeling when you were coloring your hair and you left the chemicals in too long? Well that’s your scalp protesting)

The most often overlooked healthy and very cheap form of treatment is simply putting olive oil in your hair. You’ve read it on this website more, but I wanted to repeat it again. Simply put a towel around your shoulder, add the olive oil, rub it in your hair with your fingers, and let it sit there for 30 minutes. It does wonders for your dry hair and your scalp.

After this you wash your hair and use a good conditioner.

On to the Shampoo’s…

There is one shampoo that time and again gets really good reviews. It’s the Keratase Bain Miroir Shine-Revealing Shampoo for Sensitized Color-Treated Hair. The Bain Miroir coats your hair strands and protects them from potential color-stripping. It also gives protection against UV rays, and environment pollutants.

It is more expensive than other quality shampoo’s, however. You can buy it online (Amazon) forĀ  around $70 per bottle. It is quite expensive, but all users love its moisturizing effects and say the color protection is “absolutely worth it.”

There are more economical options on the market for sure. Simply do a search and make sure you read the ingredients. You will find the best shampoo for color treated hair to not contain sulfates. So pay attention to that.

A Word of Caution

When you’ve spent money on your color treatment, spend money on your shampoo and conditioner as well.

All to often I’ve heard people complain about the cheap Walmart, K-mart or Safeway shampoo brands (and for that matter all cheap non-brands).

It is simply true that a brand (and thereby it’s more expensive) shampoo performs better than a cheap one.

Other side effects from using a cheap shampoo can be that it changes the color of your hair. I’ve heard of people who had color dyed their hair blond, after which they washed it with a cheap shampoo, coloring their blond hair purple.

Cheap shampoo’s are very good when you’ve got plenty of hair, not colored and you just want it cleaned.

So if you do color treat your hair, it is worth finding the best shampoo for color treated hair you can find, to have a good long lasting effect and proper hair care.

Shampoo is my thing. And looking good is as well. I’ve always thought that good looking hair was one of the most important parts of personal grooming.
